A man in his 70s is lucky to be alive after an epic effort to rescue him from his car which fell down a ravine in Central Queensland.

The driver had gone off the Blackman Road at Colosseum, between Gladstone and Bundaberg, and became trapped in his car after it fell “quite a way” down the ravine sometime on Thursday afternoon.

He then spent a terrifying night stuck before roadworkers discovered the crash on Friday and raised the alarm about 9am.

Photos released by Queensland Ambulance Service show their crews working alongside police, firefighters and Rescue 300 Rockhampton to reach the man with workers being winched down the rugged hillside.

“After spending the night in the open, he was lucky to have been discovered by road workers,” Queensland Ambulance Service posted on its Facebook page

“It was a mammoth effort due to the terrain, with the landscape making the rescue difficult.

“Thanks to the efforts of all on scene, the patient was safely extricated and transported to hospital – what a tremendous effort by everyone involved.”

The driver serious head, neck, and abdominal injuries but QAS confirmed on Saturday he had been transported in a stable condition.

Prior to being freed from the vehicle, the man was able to communicate with emergency services.

Investigations are continuing into what caused the accident.

The area is about 80km south of Gladstone and 134km northwest of Bundaberg.
