A Somerset pool in need of repairs will undergo a $4 million makeover as part of a south east Queensland community stimulus program.
Somerset Regional Council on Wednesday welcomed the maintenance makeover for the Lowood swimming pool.
Speaking after council’s ordinary meeting in Esk, Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann thanked the Queensland Government for choosing to fund infrastructure in the area under a competitive funding program.
The main features of the upgrade include:
• access ramp for the disabled
• wet decks along two sides of the pool
• increase in the depth of water
• shallow training bench
• replacement of the toddler pool with a zero-depth child splash pad
• improved filtration and chlorination systems
• installation of solar panels.
“We will retain eight lanes in the pool and add the disabled access ramp as a separate feature built into the pool,” Cr Lehmann said.
“Council also hopes to make the most of the great views from the pool’s elevated site while working within our funding agreement.
“This project is the result of significant planning over the past year, now we can work with our consulting engineers on the detailed delivery strategy with the hope of minimising construction impacts in the swimming season.
“We are also grateful to the community for the significant support we received for our successful funding submission – this really helped our case,” Cr Lehmann said.
Somerset Regional Council and the Queensland Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning will jointly fund the $4 million upgrade of Lowood pool through the SEQ Community Stimulus Program.
