Six homes 'uninhabitable' after Fernvale super storm

FOLLOWING brutal storms last night an incident command centre has been established at the Fernvale Futures Complex to aid the clean-up after the storm.

UPDATE: CURRENTLY 101 jobs have been logged through the incident command centre at Fernvale after a severe storm ripped through the south east Queensland town last night.

Crews are working on scene, assessing houses which sustained damage from the storm.

In a statement from Somerset Regional Council, 39 of the logged jobs had been completed and six homes have been declared uninhabitable.

A total of seven homes have been moderately damaged and 53 have received minor damage from 109 properties which have been assessed.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann, along with Police Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jo-Ann Miller, Ipswich West MP Jim Madden and Acting Assistant Commissioner for south east Neil Reid have met with some impacted residents.

Cr Lehmann said council was working with all relevant agencies and government officials to deliver a coordinated approach to the recovery clean-up efforts.

"Last night's supercell has certainly caused a lot of destruction but we are very fortunate that no lives were lost or residents seriously injured," Cr Lehmann said.

"Unfortunately some residents have sustained substantial damage to their homes.

"Council is working with all relevant emergency services personnel and the Department of Communities to deliver a rapid recovery response and get all residents and impacted businesses on their feet as quickly as possible.

"At this stage it's difficult to gauge how long the clean-up effort will take but we will continue to work together with all agencies to ensure a swift clean-up and recovery effort."

Energex has restored power to the Fernvale CBD and are still progressively working to restore power to about 550 properties.

Energex hopes to have all power restored by about midnight Wednesday, October 28.

Residents impacted by yesterday's supercell are reminded to call Council on 5424 4000 for general enquiries or alternatively they can visit the Fernvale Futures Centre but are kindly requested not to disrupt emergency services personnel working on the recovery process but to use the front doors and speak with Council staff.

EARLIER: FOLLOWING brutal storms last night an incident command centre has been established at the Fernvale Futures Complex to aid the clean-up after the storm.

Council, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, SES are utilising the centre to manage the clean-up at Fernvale and surrounding areas.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann is also on site speaking with emergency services.

Whilst power has been restored to Fernvale, crews are still working to restore power to about 600 properties.

A council spokesperson said residents are reminded to call the SES for roof damages, and crews are working on a priority basis with some homes being declared inhabitable.

Dozens of SES crews have been tasked across the Fernvale area to assist with clean up.

A rapid damage assessment is being carried out in the impact zone.

Residents affected by the storm can place green waste and storm damaged items (larger items) on the kerbside for collection or dispose near the toilet blocks near Twin Bridges for central collection, if preferred.

Roads currently closed at Clive Street, Fernvale and Fairney View. All major roads are open.
