The two accused had been held in custody since their arrest days after the alleged event with Mr Moses refused bail while Mr Numdi made no application for bail until Monday, October 9.

He was not required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday when his solicitor Brad Skuse, of Skuse Graham Criminal Lawyers, applied for bail on his behalf.

Police prosecutor Bettina Trenear told the court police opposed bail.

Ms Trenear said Mr Katui had been rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane where he was placed in an induced coma and had surgery for swelling on the brain allegedly arising from his injuries.

His condition initially was considered critical, however, Mr Katui was now out of the coma and recovering but remained in hospital with no timeline for his recovery known, she said.

Ms Trenear said one of the groups involved in the altercation originated from Samoa while the other group was from PNG but the members of each group were not known to each other.

Mr Skuse said his client and his wife had been in Australia for four years and they lived in Gatton and both worked at nearby meatworks.
