A magistrate has given an 18-year-old a pep-talk in court after she was found with stolen bank cards and marijuana

The 18-year-old’s lawyer told a Gatton Court he advised the young woman that to make her career dream to come true, she has to stop doing drugs and getting caught up in crime.

An aspiring nurse has fronted court after being busted with stolen bank cards and drugs in her possession.

Chardonnay Georgia Suey told police her brother sent two bank cards and a gift card to her a week prior, despite her not knowing the names on the cards.

The stolen cards were found in Suey’s Gatton home during a search on July 5, with police also finding a small bud of marijuana, plastic water pipe and scissors tucked under her bedroom pillow.

In the Gatton Magistrates Court on July 5, ATSILS lawyer Kevin Rose told the court his 18-year-old client had dreams of being a nurse.

“She’s been to Grade 11 at school and although she hasn’t worked since school, she is entering a Tafe course,” Mr Rose said.

Suey corrected her lawyer, and said she only completed one month of grade 11.

“I said to her, ‘If you want to be a nurse, stop doing drugs and getting involved in crime’,” Mr Rose said.

The court heard Suey used marijuana to medicate her anxiety.

Magistrate Peter Saggers gave Suey a pep-talk and said there was no reason she couldn’t become a nurse.

“You’ve just got to be fair dinkum about it. Not talk it up – actually do it,” Mr Saggers said.

“Whatever you need to do for the bridging course, you’ve just got to start. You’ve got to take the first step.”

Suey pleaded guilty to one charge of receiving tainted property, possessing utensils and possessing a dangerous drug.

She was fined $350 and a conviction was not recorded.
