The transport and trucking community came together at Gatton on the Lockyer Valley to pay their respects to members who lost their lives on and off the roads, with 72 people added to the Lights on The Hill Memorial honour roll in 2023.
Community members lined the side of the Warrego Highway from Toowoomba to Ipswich and cheered on the convoy of trucks as they made their way to the Gatton Showgrounds on Saturday morning, September 30.
Former truck driver Amanda Reihl attended the event in honour of her grandfather Greg William Robinson who started Robinsons Transport at Toowoomba in 1974.
“He passed away of a brain tumour in 2019 and right up until the day he died, he was still running his business,” she said.
The former truck driver’s brother drove a truck down from the range, alongside two others in memory of ‘Robbo”.
She said an important part of the event was educating the broader community about the perils of life on the road.
“It’s also nice to be recognised, the long hours away from family to put food on the table for not only your own family but Australia-wide – without your trucks you don’t get your food.
“It’s really good to have so much support around, we put our lives on the line every day to ensure others have food and other basic needs.”
The mother of four said she stopped driving when she fell pregnant with her third and fourth children, who were twins.
“The hardest part is being away for so long and missing out on family events,” she said.
“No matter how hard you try to get home for something important, you can’t.”
She urged the community to be more mindful and appreciative of trucks on the road.
“You don’t know how long they have been away for, and they’re out there driving for everyone else on the road safety, not their own,”
“In a split second things can go wrong, and cars are a lot quicker at responding than trucks can.
“Please be mindful, giveaway, respect what they need.”
