Thousands of farmers and agricultural experts will inspect the latest crops and genetics at the Lockyer Valley Growers Expo this weekend.
After five years of drought, dust and fire, the growers association is bringing back the field day that will showcase the latest in growing fresh produce.
Association president Michael Sippel said it wasn’t an event like the Gatton Show, but was specifically for growers, farmers, and the horticulture industry.
In 2016, more than 4000 people inspected plots of fresh produce, and Mr Sippel is hoping for strong numbers given the recent Melbourne coronavirus outbreak.
“It’s been five year since the last event, and there’s a whole new range of products available,” he said.
“There might be a couple of varieties from our last field day, but there would be more than 1000 different genetics in this display this year.
“That’s how quickly the industry changes.”
Global and national seed companies have planted trial plots at the Gatton Research Facility, ranging from lettuces to brassicas and everything in between.
Mr Sippel, who also works for Terranova Seeds – a national seed company that specialises in vegetables – said he had already received calls from many growers eager to know more about his products.
“From a grower’s perspective, it’s an industry highlight. We feel it’s something we need to do to give back to the industry by being a co-ordinator of such an event,” he said.
The Expo will also feature a gala ball on Sunday night, where 400 are expected to attend.
The Expo on Sunday, June 6 is open to the public.
Entry is via the Gatton Research Facility, John Howie Memorial Drive (take UQ Gatton exit off the Warrego highway).
