So close, but not close enough.

The Laidley show will for the second year in a row fall victim to coronavirus, with event organisers saying the decision was taken out of their hands.

Laidley Show Society president Craig Wass the proposed Friday 6pm end of lockdown was “too close” to the start of the show on Saturday morning.

“The easiest thing is to make the call now and take the call out of everyone’s hands if they would come or not,” he said.

Despite cancelling Laidley’s major event of the year, the show society plan to continue the exhibitions throughout July.

The popular horse events will be held on July 17 – the same weekend as the Gatton show.

Mr Wass said both show societies had discussed the horse events, and with Gatton not hosting hacking classes, Laidley were given the okay to run their competition.

Across the following weekends, Mr Wass hopes to showcase a few sections each weekend, potentially culminating in a “wing-ding” of an event.

“We’ve got some fireworks we have paid for. Maybe when we are all finished, we’ll have a big wing-ding. We have a bar full of drinks that we will have to get rid of too,” he said.

“We could have a big up you covid party at some stage.”

Mr Wass hoped by still showcasing exhibitions it might encourage new entrants, stewards and volunteers for the 2022 show.

“All the stewards and committee, they’ve worked really hard this year to get our show back,” he said.

“We missed out last year, everyone was keen for this year.

“Even though we didn’t initially have the lockdown, we had Covid hanging over our heads. It’s just something we have to live with.”

During the next week, the Laidley Show Society will work on their exhibition program with more information to come.

Mr Wass thanked the community and the committee for their support this year.
