From classic to mega volume, eyelash extensions are on trend and it takes a talented technician to dial up the drama when it comes to lashes.

Gatton Star chatted with Charly Spicer from CJ's Beauty Lounge about the people behind the business and what makes them the local favourite.

Q: How does it feel to be voted as the best lash technician in your area, and what are the secrets to being a great lash technician?

Charly Spicer: I was so shocked to find out that I was voted as the best lash technician in the area. I am so proud of myself to see how far I have come and more to explore and learn. The main secrets I go by is the time and dedication I took to learn the art of lash extensions and practicing everyday.

Q: Walk us through what the process typically looks like from first meeting a client to the lashes being finished?

Charly Spicer: I first greet the client and introduce them to my salon, especially if it's their first time, I want them to feel comfortable and relaxed in my little space. Once they are laid down and ready for me to start, I ask little questions such as “Is the aircon too cold?” or “Does the tape feel comfortable under your eyes?” or reconfirm to them what set of lashes they are wanting, etc. Some client's like to have a lovely chat while I do their lashes and others just like to relax and might even have a little nap, I am happy with whatever they feel more comfortable with! Once the lashes are done, I sit them up and ask them if they like their lashes and give them a little lash brush and explain to them the basic aftercare. They pay and then they are on their way out with beautiful fluffy lashes!

Q: What lashes have you done that stick out as being particularly memorable or challenging?

Charly Spicer: When I first started lashes it was all challenging to me until I kept on practicing to create the perfect sets. The most challenging to me was when I introduced bigger lashes, for example, 7D wispy lash extensions. This is my biggest set I offer and when I first introduced it I found it very difficult to find the right angle and positions to apply these lashes, because of the extra fan and curl I am not used to. But with constant practice and time, I improved and it became 2nd nature to me.

Q: How has your work and the industry as a whole evolved over time, and what are the newest trends and innovations in the industry currently?

Charly Spicer: My work from when I first started lash extensions has evolved immaculately over time with the amount of time, dedication, care and practice I put into my work. I struggled a lot with thinking I couldn't do it and I was very hard on myself. The more I practiced, the more confidence I gained in my work and found what style of lashes I like to create best. The newest trend for lash extensions at the moment is called “less is more” which means people are going back to classic lash extensions for a more natural look then the big fluffy full lashes.

Q: What sets you apart from other lash technicians, and what are your secrets to great lashes?

Charly Spicer: In my opinion I find that I am different because I take the time to make sure my lash extensions are perfect to suit what my client wants and making them feel comfortable in my home salon. I also try my best to fit last minute client's in so they can get what they want. My secret to great lashes is not rushing and taking my time to make sure the glue sets properly and the lash is sitting in the right position, so the set is perfect and even!

Q: What are the ways that you ensure longevity in your clients' lashes and that they continue looking great?

Charly Spicer: The best ways for keeping lash extensions looking great and lasting for a long time is not picking at them as this causes them to fall out when they aren't ready and your own natural lashes will come with it. Also, keeping them clean after wearing makeup or having a dirty face, etc, and brushing them daily.

Q: What would be your advice for someone looking to start out in the industry?

Charly Spicer: I have been in this industry for 2 years now, I started when I was only 18 years old. My advice for someone who is interested in starting out in the industry is to gain all the information and tips you can from your academy and don't give up, even when you feel like it's hard. The more time, dedication and practice you put into your lashes, the more you will improve and become the best lash technician in your area!
