Harley Willis earned his name from the famous motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson — so it was only appropriate the youngster’s celebration of life was capped off with a convoy of two-wheeled machines.
More than 60 motorbike riders and retro car enthusiasts performed a “last ride” after the Gatton nine-year-old’s funeral in Toowoomba last week, a fitting farewell to a boy who “noticed beauty in the world that others might have missed”.
Harley, who is survived by his parents John and Angie, sisters Harmony and Aleesha, brother Tyler and twin Nate, died on December 29 following an asthma attack.
The ride at the end of the service was organised by the Toowoomba Bike Enthusiasts group, of which Mr Willis was a member.
Mr Willis told loved ones his son was a kind and intelligent boy whose real passion was gaming — particularly Fortnite, for which the logo adorned the exterior of his coffin.
“He showed his amazing, loving soul from day one, giving hugs to his twin brother Nate and always being so giving and willing to share the love he had,” he said.
“It’s funny, you hear stories about these adult gamers playing against these little kids who absolutely kicked their butts — well that was our Harley.
“He even became ranked in Fortnight, it seemed the only thing holding him back from competing and being paid to be a gamer was his age.”
Ms Willis said he would miss the random acts of kindness Harley showed for his family.
“You were my beautiful little boy, a firecracker of a kid, an old soul – we shared a bond that needed no words,” she said.
“Thank you for choosing me to be your mum — you always knew when I needed a hug or words of comfort.
“You were a smart boy who loved puzzles and math and was good at both, and was an A-grade student.
“Thank you for all the flowers you picked me, and all the love you gave me – I will miss you for the rest of my days.”
Ms Willis told News Corp she had been overwhelmed by the number of people who gathered the give her son a proper send-off.
“I really appreciate everybody who came,” she said.
