Burgess Park is now home to apprentice jockey Billie-Rose

RACING: She's won at Burgess Park before but today (Thursday), apprentice jockey Billie-Rose Derbyshire will be looking for a win on her new hometown track.

Originally from Gympie, Derbyshire, 22, made the move to Gatton to finish using her provincial weight claims after she struggled to gain race rides along the coast.

Currently on loan to Brenton Andrew Racing for three months, Derbyshire's been hitting the south east Queensland tracks, having recently claimed her first double at Toowoomba on October 17.

She rode Pat Sexton's Prince of Peace in race three and Andrew's mare Roxy Rhythm in race six for the double.

"I'd never ridden a double at Toowoomba," Derbyshire said.

"I was getting more rides at Toowoomba than at Gympie."

Having grown up around horses, Derbyshire said knowing she could ride led her to becoming a jockey.

There's no history of jockeys in her family, but that hasn't stopped Derbyshire from racing.

She started track work riding in Gympie when she was 17-years-old and obtained her licence with Barry Gill where his late wife Desiree Gill taught Derbyshire the ropes.

"His (Barry) wife taught me to ride," Derbyshire said.

She's since ridden for Robert Wilson on the Sunshine Coast and Kerry Munce at Gympie.

"My manager (Garry Wright), he got me into the Toowoomba area from Gympie," Derbyshire said.

Derbyshire's first ride for Brenton Andrew Racing was on Roubaix at Toowoomba in August, where the duo finished second.

With a permanent jockey currently added to his stable, Andrew said it was a bonus having Derbyshire join the stable.

"She has a good temperament with the horses and the lightweight is ideal for gallops, plus the added advantage of knowing the horse for race day," Andrew said.

"She's a hard worker and gives 110% on race day."

Derbyshire will be looking for another winner at her new home track today riding for Brenton Andrew Racing on Hurricane Cassie at Gatton.

"Every day is different," Derbyshire said.

"You get paid to do what you love doing - riding horses."
