A garbage truck’s entire load of rubbish was dumped on an Inala street on Thursday morning after a fire inside the vehicle.

The incident occurred around 8.15 on Rosella St when the driver noticed smoke coming from the back of the truck.

Witnesses say they saw the rubbish suddenly pouring out from the back of the truck.

Civic Cabinet Chair for City Standards Councillor Sarah Hutton said residents incorrectly putting batteries and flammables could be the cause of fires in garbage trucks.

“We take community safely seriously and unfortunately many residents don’t realise throwing batteries in their household bins is causing potentially deadly fires and explosions in our suburbs,” she said.

“Batteries don’t belong in bins, and we all must take responsibility for keeping our city safe but also clean and sustainable.”

Brisbane City Council confirmed the street was subsequently cleaned after the incident.

Residents are encouraged to recycle batteries for free at Resource Recovery Centres located in Chandler, Willawong, Ferny Grove and Nudgee.
