BRISBANE has recorded the second highest population growth rate among Australia’s capitals, with 52,600 people moving to the River City in 2018-19, according to new data.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed Brisbane’s growth rate of 2.1 per cent brought the population to more than 2.5 million.

Melbourne topped the survey with a rise of 2.3 per cent, while Sydney was third with 1.7 per cent.
McCrindle Research’s Mark McCrindle said Brisbane’s huge increase was because the city had the three “green lights” of growth.
“Brisbane is very strong in its natural increase, overseas migration and internal migration, which is very strong,” Mr McCrindle said.
“Queensland has always been the holiday destination and a bit of a retirement hotspot, but it more young people are moving, with the weather and lifestyle a strong factor.”
For young couple Emily Webb and Tim Tattam, Brisbane was “an obvious choice”, with the couple relocating in September and February respectively.
“There is a lot more work around for me and I’m definitely more of a city girl than a coast girl,” said Ms Webb, who moved from the Sunshine Coast.
The pair, both 21, now live together in Bowen Hills, and Mr Tattam said his move from Moree in northern NSW was a no-brainer.
“Brissie has that perfect balance of being a big city and feeling like you’re living in a big country town,” he said.
“It has great weather, a good night-life, beaches close by and you’re not missing opportunities, it just makes more sense to be in Brisbane.”
