Brisbane Olympics 2032: Qld to be events capital of Australia

The State Government has pledged to use the 2032 Olympic Games as a drawcard for other global sporting competitions.

Queensland is poised to become the events capital of Australia this decade, with the State Government pledging to use the Olympic Games as a drawcard for other global sporting competitions.

Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has thrown his support behind Queensland hosting more major events in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics, after The Sunday Mail revealed a push for the city to bid for the 2026 FINA World Swimming Championships as a trial.

Brisbane entertainment chief Harvey Lister on Sunday called for the Government and sporting stakeholders to consider building the Brisbane Live venue and a temporary Olympic pool well before the 2032 event so it could be used in the swimming world championships.

Mr Hinchliffe, Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics, said the state would use the next decade to target key global events.

“Queensland is at the start of a transformational decade ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” he said.

“We already have the infrastructure and expertise to lead the nation in the development and training of elite, high-performance athletes.

“The 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games also present a wonderful opportunity to attract international events.”

Queensland is already slated to host games for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022 and the 2023 FIFA Women’s Football World Cup.

“As momentum builds toward the 2032 Games, we’re expecting to see interest from several world and national sporting bodies in holding high-quality major events here in Queensland,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
