Brisbane 2032 Games legacy summit to involve public

Five hundred members of the public will be chosen for an Olympics legacy summit to shape the city’s post-Games future.

Brisbane will host an Olympics legacy summit early next year, with up to 500 members of the public putting forward their ideas for how Queensland can be transformed as a result of the 2032 Games.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the event on Friday, saying Queensland’s chance to host an Olympic and Paralympic Games “has never been about a few weeks of competition”.

“It is about the decades worth of investment leading up to them and the decades that will follow as Queensland steps on to the world stage like never before,” she said.

“We are not wasting this opportunity. We have a plan.

“Our legacy program will ensure that the decisions made for 2032 will deliver benefits far beyond.”

Ms Palaszczuk said Queenslanders could start to apply to take part in the March 22 summit from Monday, saying those selected would have further input into the Games.

“Those 500 people will bring the feedback of their communities, giving thousands a say in this golden opportunity,” she said.

“We want all Australians to share with us how our state can be shaped and transformed by hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“I want as many people from Queensland as possible to take part.”

An online survey would also open next week, allowing people to put forward their “hopes and dreams for the Games”.

In July, 12 Queenslanders were appointed to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Legacy Committee – an idea born from The Courier-Mail’s Future Brisbane series.

Members include businessman John Wagner, First Nations consultant Georgina Richters, and company director and former chief entrepreneur Wayne Gerard.

“As Olympian Nat Cook is fond of saying, teamwork makes the dream work,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
