Brisbane drivers are paying the highest prices for petrol compared to any other Australian capital as families feel the cost-of-living pinch, a new study has found.
Research from Compare the Market shows the average price for fuel in Brisbane is $2.23 per litre for unleaded petrol 91. While in Sydney it is $2.02, in Melbourne it’s $2.07, in Perth it’s $2 and in Adelaide it’s the cheapest at $1.85.
The new data also shows fuel prices are cheaper on the south side of Brisbane. About 37 service stations at suburbs including Cannon Hill, Tingalpa, Acacia Ridge and Strathpine have petrol under $2 a litre. While more than 100 have prices higher than $2.29 a litre
Compare the Market’s Chris Ford said there were a number of factors that pushed prices up at the pump.
“Oil prices have rebounded in the last quarter, up 17 per cent since a low in mid-June, which has kept wholesale prices high here in Australia,” he said.
“The Australian dollar has also fallen in the last month, down about four cents, which has affected our purchasing power.
“In that same time frame, wholesale averages have climbed more than 16 cents per litre which has kept the pump prices higher for a longer period.
“The fuel excise also increased again at the start of August too, up about 1.1 cent per litre to 48.8 cents per litre, which may have been a contributing factor in this most recent price spike in the last week.
Mr Ford said those looking for relief may be waiting for sometime.
“For those cities already past the peak of their fuel pricing cycle, we’re seeing that the normal rate of discounting has slowed down considerably,” Mr Ford said.
“If Brisbane follows these cities as it usually does, it will mean that it takes a bit longer for prices to drop.
“What’s shocked a lot of motorists is how quickly prices rose in greater Brisbane during this latest pricing cycle.
“This is why it’s so important to keep a regular eye on fuel prices so you can fill up when
prices are on the cheap.”
Mr Ford said across Brisbane there was a 40 per cent difference per litre between the highest and lowest fuel prices across greater Brisbane.
