Fraser Island name change to K’gari: What you have to say

It’s official: Fraser Island will be known as K’gari. But that change has only sparked furious debate. JOIN THE CONVERSATION

It’s official: Fraser Island will now be known as K’gari.

Now the question is what’s next?

K’gari, a word meaning paradise in the language of the traditional owners, the Butchulla people, will replace the term Fraser Island — similar to Uluru shedding the name “Ayers Rock”.

However not all couriermail.com.au readers were happy about the change.

Ties it all in really. Although in saying Eliza Fraser did a lot of damage to white/aboriginal relations at the time (research it people) so maybe this is a good change.

Why is it such a big deal? Australia was invaded and given western names…..why is it a bad thing that they are recognised as the native name? I don’t know why people get so worked up by it. It’s just a name……….stop catastrophizing it
