Wind warning cancelled but dangerous surf still expected

CAMPERS who chose not to evacuate Fraser Island were being warned on Tuesday night to expect strong winds and dangerous surf, with conditions not set to ease until Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting winds of up to 100kmh but said in an update just before 5am on Wedneday that damaging wind gusts were no longer expected.
Gusty conditions could still be expected during the afternoon but below warning strength.
The bureau is still warning of higher-than-normal tides and dangerous surf conditions, which might lead to beach erosion, along the exposed coast of Fraser Island.
Fraser Island rangers did the rounds on Tuesday advising campers to evacuate, or to be prepared to evacuate, but many chose to stay.
Fraser Island Police Station's Bill Worden said the wind had picked up throughout the day but everything was "quite ok".
Meanwhile, the Mary River at Maryborough was not expected to flood overnight following Gympie's predicted peak at 10m on Tuesday night.
"As long as Mother Nature doesn't unleash something unexpected," Fraser Coast disaster co-ordinator Mal Churchill said.
Minor flood levels are expected between Bauple and Teddington Weir on Wednesday, while major flood levels have peaked along Tinana Creek and are starting to ease.
Maryborough received 90mm and Hervey Bay received 54mm throughout the day on Tuesday.
Residents should expect isolated showers on Wednesday.
