A planned burn on K’gari (Fraser Island) is underway in a bid to reduce forest fuels.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct the operations near Kingfisher South East from Wednesday until Friday.

The burn is part of an annual hazard reduction and conservation management program for parks and forests and is intended to create a mosaic pattern or burnt and unburnt areas.

Locals smoke may be seen in the Kingfisher Bay area as a result.

A QPWS spokesperson said this would help reduce the intensity of subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Residents driving in the area should take caution.

Residents are also advised to keep windows closed and those suffering from respiratory illnesses should keep medications close by.
