Despite some event cancellations, there is still plenty to commemorate on January 26 around the region - from thong-tossing, BBQs and classic Aussie entertainment. Here is the full list of what’s on:

Despite the cancellation of the major Fraser Coast Australia Day Award ceremony due to the spread of the Omicron strain of Covid, there is still plenty of ways to commemorate the day on Wednesday.
With thong tossing, live music and all your favourite Aussie foods, here is the best Aussie line-up you can sink your teeth into on January 26 on the Fraser Coast:
Toogoom & District RSL Flag-raising ceremony, BBQ & games
For a good old Aussie afternoon of flag-raising, thong tossing and a BBQ head down to the Toogoom & District RSL Sub-Branch at 138 Oregan Creek Rd, Takura.
For a gold coin donation, you can watch the flag-raising ceremony at 12noon which will be followed by a BBQ and then try your strength at the thong and mullet tossing competitions. There will be prizes for those in the best dressed Aussie attire. You will need to show you‘re double vaxxed and use the QR check in app. Masks are required when moving about but not when seated or outside
Hervey Bay Boat Club
To make the most of the hump-day public holiday on January 26, the Hervey Bay Boat Club will be delivering a big day of live music, competitions, games, fancy dress, specials and more to celebrate Australia Day. Live music will kick off at 12 noon and feature Neil Wenk.
Make sure you get down near the Marina at Buccaneer Dr to join in the fun.
Australia Day party with fireworks, Maryborough Cricket Club
With no luck at New Year’s Eve the Maryborough Cricket Club have saved up all their celebrations for this Australia Day. On Wednesday, January 26, head down to 46 Ariadne St, Maryborough for a night of fun from 4pm – 8pm. There will be free amusements for kids, food vans, a can bar and live music with Emma Newman. Make sure you stick around for fireworks towards the end of the night.
Tennis Open Day
Inspired by the Australian Open? Fancy a nice day out on your day off? The Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association is holding an Australia Day Open Day at On Wednesday, January 26 at Hervey Bay Tennis Centre, 79 Colyton Street, Torquay. The event starts at 9am and runs through until 2pm- which gives plenty of time to get involved in the free activities such as jumbo tennis, vintage tennis, ball machine, hit the target, longest shot, jumping castle. Prizes are up for grabs.
Boonooroo Golf Course & Tavern’s Aussie Day fun
If you are looking for the ultimate line up of iconic Australian Day fun then head to the Boonooroo Golf Course & Tavern on Wednesday January 26 at 100 Rawson Rd, Boonooroo. You can try your luck at toad races, mullet toss and the thong throw. There will be prizes and the best dressed will be picked. To keep you fed and watered there will be cold drinks, snags, onion gravy, mash and lamingtons for lunch.
Hervey Bay Rotary Club Showcase Dinner
Citizens who have received recognition in the Australia Day Awards and or have received Citizenship Papers are invited to attend a Rotary Showcase Dinner in recognition of their achievement at Hervey Bay RSL, Torquay Rd, Hervey Bay from 6pm. Guest Speakers will present topics on Australia and local service clubs will showcase their specific contributions to the local communities.
Urangan Pier Park Market
Spend your Australia Day at the Australian-themed markets on Wednesday January 26 at 6/8 Pilot St, Urangan. Kids can have their faces painted while adults will love the range of stalls selling fresh produce and great bargains, with entertainment by Grumps and Roses. Dress up in your best Australian outfit and you can even dress up your dog too. The markets will run from 7am - 12noon. Check in using QR code and adhere to social distancing.
Australia Day at Bay Central Tavern
If it’s the Aussie pub classics you are chasing, head to the Bay Central Tavern at 155 Boat Harbour Dr, Pialba where the crew will be hard at work making sure it will be a great day. The kitchen will be serving all your favourite foods, you can request a song and be sure to wear your best thongs for the thong tossing competition. The fun begins at 10am.
Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum
While the usual Australia Day commemorations have been cancelled, the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum at 13 Zephyr St, Scarness will still open in the afternoon from 1pm - 4.30pm. There will be free mini Australian flags for kids and blacksmith and ropemaking demonstrations may still run in the afternoon. Entry cost is $10 for adults, $3 for children under 14 and pre-school children are free.
Double vaccination rules apply with mask wearing necessary in enclosed spaces.
Cozii Cafe Australia Day menu
Head down to the Cozii Cafe coffee shop on 98 Wharf St, Maryborough to sink your teeth into a decent Aussie bite. The café will be open to serve mini pavlovas, lamington slice, party pies and sausage rolls, Ned Kelly Pizza and cranking out the Aussie tunes all day.
