Rangers are investigating after a two-year-old child was bitten by a dingo on K’gari.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service was advised about 2.45pm yesterday about the incident, which occurred in the carpark at Lake McKenzie and involved an untagged female dingo.

A family was about to leave Lake McKenzie when the father saw the dingo near the right-hand side of their car.

He told his family to get into the left-hand side of the car, and the dingo walked to the other side of the road before running to the front of the car.

The dingo bit the boy on his right thigh before being chased away by the father.

The incident left the boy with two puncture wounds to his thigh that were treated.

The family drove to Eurong to report the incident to rangers before proceeding to Kingfisher Resort for further treatment.

Rangers will continue patrols in the Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) area and provide dingo safety messaging to people on the island.

Visitors and residents on K’gari are reminded to remain vigilant at all times by keeping children at arm’s length, never walking alone and carrying a stick at all times.

It comes after a series of incidents involving dingoes and children in the first half of the year.

On April 23, a family was packing up after visiting Awinya Creek on the western side of the island and two boys who were covered in sand were told to wash off in the creek.

As the boys washed off at the mouth of the creek, a dingo ran straight at them.

The boys screamed and ran towards their parents.

The dingo bit the 10-year-old on the back of his leg, leaving minor injuries including a scratch and bruising to his lower right calf muscle.

A nine-year-old girl was also attacked by a dingo on the island in April.

Under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, it is an offence to deliberately harm, interfere or interact with dingoes.

Negative dingo encounters should immediately be reported to a QPWS ranger by calling 07 4127 9150.

Then in May, investigations were also being carried out after a dingo was allegedly killed with a speargun on the island.
