It’s the prison where Queensland’s most notorious criminals are serving time, and it holds a high number of paedophiles, sex offenders and high-profile prisoners who are under “protection” there.

It has a high number of paedophiles, sex offenders and high profile prisoners.

Among the inmates are Brett Peter Cowan, a serial paedophile who is serving life imprisonment for the murder of Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe, Gerard Baden-Clay, convicted of murdering his wife, Allison, Rick Thorburn, who murdered his foster daughter Tiahleigh Palmer in 2015, and former Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale, convicted of extortion.

Despite the protective nature of the centre, that doesn’t mean the risks of being a prisoner have been reduced to zero.

Cowan has been the target of repeated attacks while behind bars.

The 51 year old is known, unsurprisingly, to be despised by other prisoners.

During his time behind bars, he has been scalded with hot water and stabbed with a sharpened toothbrush.

Cowan, 51, lured the 13-year-old into his car on Queensland‘s Sunshine Coast on December 7, 2003, before strangling him in an abandoned house and dumping his naked body in a bush.

Cowan was arrested in August 2011, almost eight years after Daniel‘s disappearance.

During the incident in which he was scalded, Cowan was playing cards with other inmates.

During a break in the game Cowan went briefly to an exercise yard where he saw Adam Paul Davidson, then 31, standing outside the laundry door next to a hot water urn, filling a yellow mop bucket.

When Cowan returned to the card game Davidson asked another inmate to move the prisoners sitting near his target.

Davidson then quietly approached Cowan from behind with the bucket and tipped the boiling water over Cowan‘s head and body.

Cowan screamed in pain and pleaded “why, why, why?”.

Davidson said he plotted the attack for a month and planned to to “scar the f***ing grub for life”.

Meanwhile, Baden-Clay had been banned from working as a carer behind bars because he allegedly inappropriately touched a male prison officer.

He also is said to have struck up a friendship with fellow wife killer John William Chardon before Chardon died.

The two were said to have bonded over “leather-bound books and prison food”.
