The Fraser Coast woke up shivering on Monday morning, following on the heels of falling temperatures over the past few days, in what was expected to be the coldest day of the year so far.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Matt Marshall said the plummeting temperatures had been caused by a cool, large air mass that had seen temperatures drop by several degrees below average across the state over the past few nights.

In Maryborough, temperatures had dropped to about 11 degrees on Sunday, while in Hervey Bay, a chilly 9.3 degrees was recorded.

“All of the state is seeing much colder than average nights,” Mr Marshall said.

“We can expect that to continue for another couple of nights, with temperatures gradually warming up from Wednesday morning.”

On Monday morning, a low of 10.5 was recorded at 5.23am in Hervey Bay, while in Maryborough, a low of 9.7 was recorded at 6.04am.

With the Fraser Coast Show to go ahead on Thursday and Friday, the weather is expected to be warmer on both days.

Mr Marshall said there could be rain from Wednesday, with a chance of showers “coming in off the water”.
