Teenager dies after two months in induced coma

THE mother of 17-year-old crash victim Michael Pickering will always remember her son as caring and loved by all.

The young Hervey Bay man died as a result of his serious head injuries in the Royal Women's and Children's Hospital in Brisbane, after spending the last two months in an induced coma.

On November 29, Michael and his 18-year-old friend were driving along Beelbi Creek Rd when his ute crashed into a tree.

He was airlifted from Hervey Bay Hospital to Brisbane, where his parents Allison and Nigel remained close by until his death about 1pm on Thursday.

Allison said Michael was the best son any parent could wish for.

"He fought so hard to stay with us, and we've lost the most precious thing that we've ever had," Allison said.

"We have 17 years of good memories with Michael and he may be gone but he'll never be forgotten.

"He touched a lot of people's lives."

She said she wished to thank the Royal Brisbane Women's and Children's Hospital for their care and support.

Since Michael's death was made public via a Queensland Police Service social media post, Michael's Facebook page was filled with memories and messages of love for him and his grieving family.

His mates remember him as a keen soccer player who was always ready with a shoulder to lean on for someone in need.

A separate Facebook group titled RIP Michael Pickering has been set up, which currently has more than 1,300 followers.

Michael's girlfriend has created Gofundme page, hoping to raise $10,000 for funeral costs.

Allison said this was done with the support of the family.

"(Michael's girlfriend) has gone and done that all on her own back," she said.

"It's what she needs to do right now, and we support that."

The page has already raised more than $2,200 for the family.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing its investigation into the crash.
