TEARS of gratitude quickly turned into bellows of laughter as new Fraser Coast citizen of the year Trevor Cecil was recognised for his life's work.

On Sunday, Mr Cecil received the award at the Hervey Bay Community Centre.

During his acceptance speech, an appreciative Mr Cecil stopped to wipe his tearing eyes.

But true to form he carried on and told several funny stories about his volunteering efforts.

For more than 50 years Mr Cecil has been actively involved in enriching the quality of life of Fraser Coast residents through sport, the arts, youth development, education and aged care.

He has been at the forefront of the promotion of the region and was one of the first to promote whale watching.

Mr Cecil is already talking about what can be done to improve this region.

"There's lots of things happening in Hervey Bay and there's a lot of things too happen in Maryborough," he said.

"I have a dream."
