HERVEY BAY recorded 30mm of rain in just two hours on Sunday morning with more expected on the way.

Maryborough has not been so lucky with no rainfall recorded at the weather station overnight or this morning.

Storm clouds have been looming over the Hervey Bay area with a constant rumbling of thunder heard in the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology radar shows Fraser Island and Hervey Bay to both be under a large storm area.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Diana Eadie said the storms were expected to stick around for Sunday afternoon and possibly Monday.

"There is a chance to see severe storms Sunday afternoon," she said.

"When the surface heating gets going you may see something kick off."

Ms Eadie said it was probable the region would see between 10mm to 15mm of rain on Sunday afternoon.
