CHRISTMAS celebrations were temporarily put on hold over the long weekend for keen Hervey Bay fishermen who were eager to take advantage of a rare high tide event.

Thanks to ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina, abnormally high tides and choppy surf conditions hit beaches from Fraser Island to the Gold Coast over the past three days.

While Hervey Bay experienced relatively calm waters, Rainbow Beach was closed and parts of Inskip Point became flooded yesterday due to the rough conditions.

Hervey Bay woman Yvonne Kelly took full advantage over Christmas Day and Boxing Day to fish in the high waters off the Urangan Pier and said it had been years since she had seen similar conditions.

Holidaymaker Cameron Manifold was able to cast a line from the rocks along the Urangan foreshore as all signs of sand went under water.

Jacqui and James Gowshall took grandchildren Nathan and Alysha Robertson to take a peek at the disappearing beach as high tide hit about 9.40am yesterday.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning yesterday that said the dangerous surf conditions had begun to ease yesterday afternoon.
