The annual Mary Poppins Festival will be back with a bang this year, with a focus on storytelling for all ages.
The festival will be held over four days at various locations in Maryborough.
It will kick off on July 1, with free events music concerts backstage and onstage at the Brolga Theatre, to pop up performances in the Bond Store Basement, there will be something for everyone during the festival.
The signature event, the Mary Poppins Festival Day in the Par’, will be held on the last day of the festival on July 4, when Maryborough’s glorious heritage streetscapes are transformed into scenes from the Poppins novels.
Key events such as the great Nanny Challenge, Chimney Sweep Dash and Best Dressed will return along with presentations by authors Robyn Osburne and Chris Collins, a magic show, a science show and a performance from Marc the Joyologist.
“We are thrilled for the return of Mary Poppins Festival and to celebrate the art of storytelling,” Fraser Coast Tourism & Events general manager Robyn Peach said.
“Storytelling is something that everyone can do and there are many art forms that can be used to convey a message.
“This year’s festival will culminate into the Day in the Park on June 4 with a grand celebration.
“We would like to encourage everyone to get into the spirit of Mary Poppins and storytelling during the festival.”
The festival honours the author of the Mary Poppins books, Pamela Lyndon Travers, who was born Helen Lyndon Goff in an upstairs bedroom of the former Australian Joint Stock Bank building in Richmond Street, Maryborough, on August 9,1899.
The bank is now an interactive museum called the Story Bank of Maryborough, which will feature prominently in the festival.
Martin Simons, General Manager of Fraser Coast Tourism & Events, said the Mary Poppins Festival was now part of Maryborough soul, providing an opportunity to celebrate the city’s wonderful historic buildings and its significant place in the early development of Queensland when it was the State’s major industrial centre, building warships and the first railway locomotives and rolling stock.
“The popularity of the event celebrating everything Mary Poppins shows the love residents have for history and their passion to ensure the early stories are not lost,” he said.
