For some time, two Fraser Coast sports clubs have had their gear “at somebody’s storage shed” but now they have their own digs.
Hervey Bay Oztag and Fraser Coast Cycling Club officially opened their new club house at the Fraser Coast Sport and Recreation Precinct on Wednesday, August 4.
Mayor George Seymour with Hervey Bay Oztag member Charlie Andersen, 16, and Fraser Coast Cycling member Harry Schoff, 15, cut the red rope at about 5pm on Wednesday.
Charlie, with her sister Shelby Ansersen, 18, will be using the club house.
She said it was exciting to be able to have somewhere her team “can call home”.
“It will be so much easier for Oztag players being able to access toilets, being able to just walk onto the field so much easier, it's just so much better having our own facility where we can access it whenever we like,” Charlie said.
Cyclist Shelby said the “best part” was the club now had their own toilets.
“This facility will help to achieve our club's goals; extending our club, introducing new cyclists and hopefully, to broaden the cycling community,” she said.
“It's like our own place, now we can keep a lot of stuff here and keep it safe.”
The club house comes two and a half years after the sport precinct opening.
Hervey Bay Basketball will also be adding a stadium at the grounds soon.
MP Bruce Saunders said sports facilities were vital to the Fraser Coast especially with the upcoming 2032 Olympics being held in Brisbane.
“First-class facilities such as these at the sport and rec precinct will be in high demand in the led up to the 2032 Olympics as training places for our future sporting stars, and bases for the international teams in the lead up to the games,” he said.
