REPAIR works on Fraser Island are continuing as a top priority to reopen camping areas, tracks and roads as soon as possible after recent severe weather, the Department of National Parks says.
In a public notice released ahead of the busy Easter break, the department said the Central Station to Lake McKenzie, via Basin Lake, section of the Fraser Island Great Walk had reopened.
The Central Station to Pile Valley section and the access track from the eastern beach via Lake Wabby to the Lake Wabby lookout had also been reopened, the department said, but the remaining sections of the Great Walk and associated camp sites all remained closed.
The Kirrar Sandblow circuit track had reopened but all walks south of Central Station and those between Kingfisher Bay and Lake McKenzie remained closed.
"All other walks should be traversed with caution," the department said.
The following roads remain closed:
- Hook Point inland road between the 11km and 18km access points
- Lake Garawongera scenic drive south of Lake Garawongera
- Bogimbah Rd
- Ungowa Rd between Wanggoolba Creek and Dillinghams Rd
- Southern Rd south of Buff Creek, including access to Buff Creek and Garry's Anchorage
The following roads should be traversed with extreme caution due to the risk of fallen trees and erosion:
- Hook Point inland road between the barge landing and 11km access point
- Southern lakes scenic drive from Lake Birrabeen south to Dilli Village
The department has urged visitors to stay informed of closures and weather conditions by checking QPWS park alerts at nprsr.qld.gov.au, the Bureau of Meteorology at bom.gov.au and tuning into radio stations, and to check road conditions at 131940.qld.gov.au.
