A smoke warning has been issued for Takura, near Hervey Bay, and the surrounding areas, two days after firefighters started battling a grassfire early on Tuesday afternoon.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson said the fire had been non threatening to any structures, but had burned more than 1200ha of bushland and was moving closer to the containment lines.

Wednesday’s strong winds pushed it south, with very high flames reaching 1m, the QFES said.

“Crews have been trying to save as much of the forest as they could.

“Back burning and dozers have also been used in containing the fire.”

QFES said the fire was currently contained, but would be monitored throughout the night.

An alert was sent out around 3.44pm Wednesday, advising residents to avoid the smoke affecting the surround areas as much as they can.
