DNA testing of a dingo pup that was speculated to have come from Fraser Island have finally come back to show it is likely the pup is from the mainland.
The young male was emaciated and malnourished when it was captured on the outskirts of Maryborough in early January.
It was delivered to the TESS Wildlife Sanctuary, where curator Ray Revill recognised characteristics consistent with pure bred dingoes from Fraser Island.
A DNA test was ordered and an investigation launched by the Department of Environment and Resource Management to prove where the dingo came from.
TESS CEO Lance Stone said the DNA results, which came back this week, did not support that the dingo was from Fraser Island but did support that the dingo was not a mixed breed dog.
He said TESS was now in talks with DERM to extend its licence to allow the dingo to stay at the sanctuary.
Members of the public will be called on to help name the timid, friendly animal once it has fully recovered.
The sanctuary already houses four dingoes in an interpretive dingo exhibit.
