A Hervey Bay doctor specialising in cancer treatment and who was instrumental in establishing treatment options for the Wide Bay region will have a radiation therapy building named after him.

Professor Bryan Burmeister, a Radiation Oncologist who has been based at GenesisCare Fraser Coast and at the Hervey Bay Hospital, will have an existing GenesisCare radiation therapy centre in Urraween named after him after supporting cancer patients across the region.

His resume is as stacked as they come, with just a few of his achievements including writing more than 150 research papers on cancer, formerly being the president of the board and chair of the scientific committee at the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group, and speaking at both national and international research conferences.

He has served the Fraser Coast for the last 10 years after previously being the Director of Radiation Oncology at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane from 2003 to 2014.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour thanked Professor Burmeister for his “extraordinary service” at a ceremony on Thursday, June 26.

“His expertise and compassion have left a lasting imprint on the lives of so many local families,” Mr Seymour said.

“Naming the building in his honour ensures that his contributions will always be remembered by the community he served so faithfully.”

The decorated and much loved doctor said he was “honoured and privileged to accept the tribute”.

“Fraser Coast has become my home and a place where many memorable work experiences have taken place.

“I take much inspiration from my patients who bravely face cancer each day and have tried to use my time and abilities to contribute something to the fight against the disease.”

Professor Burmeister recently retired from his ongoing clinical role as radiation oncologist at GenesisCare in April 2025, but reinforcements are on their way to Wide Bay cancer clinics.

Dr Phoebe Allison has begun treating patients at GenesisCare’s Fraser Coast and Bundaberg centres this month and joins existing radiation oncologists Dr Tracy Sexton and Dr Tracy Wang-Chao in the region.
