An independent health service investigation has been commissioned into the death of an elderly man at Hervey Bay Hospital after he was hit with a walking stick, while the police investigation is also ongoing.
It comes after this publication revealed last month that an 84-year-old Torquay man had died two days after the attack, which happened on March 24.
The alleged attacker, believed to be a dementia patient, was aged in his 70s, police said, but no charges have been laid.
On Tuesday a police spokeswoman confirmed an investigation into the man’s death way ongoing.
The victim is believed to have been assaulted while he was asleep in bed while staying in a ward of the hospital.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances around the incident, and no charges have been laid.
A spokeswoman from the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service said the family had requested privacy at this time, which Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service respected.
“Wide Bay HHS takes incidents of this nature extremely seriously, and we extend our deepest sympathies to family and staff impacted,” she said.
“Wide Bay HHS is committed to an open and transparent response.
“In addition to our standard internal reviews, we have commissioned an independent Health Service Investigation.
“This is a comprehensive process that will consider all aspects of the incident and make recommendations to the health service.
“We are unable to provide details about an incident under police or coroner’s investigation.”
