A woman who repeatedly stabbed her partner, causing his lung to collapse, later breached a suspended jail sentence by swinging a shovel at him.

Tarneecia Patricia Gale Lee Douglas, 30, was sentenced for the breach by the Hervey Bay District Court last month.

Judge Jennifer Rosengren said in sentencing Douglas that she had received a sentence of 18 months in prison, suspended after three months for 18 months, for the wounding.

According to court documents, Douglas was drinking at her aunt’s home in Cherbourg on March 24, 2019.

Her partner arrived and they had an argument that became physical.
Several blows were exchanged, one resulting in Douglas being kicked to the ground.

While she was on the ground, her partner kicked her before he left, the documents read.

Douglas and her cousin then walked to another house where there was arguing and fighting between Douglas and her partner.

She then armed herself with a knife, went into the yard and stabbed him in the shoulder, neck and chest area.

“He got some really quite serious injuries,” Judge Rosengren said.

The man was hospitalised with a collapsed lung as a result of one of the stab wounds.

There had been a delay in sentencing Douglas after the wounding as there had been a warrant out for her arrest, the documents read.

Then on October 14, 2024, she breached the sentence by swinging a shovel at her partner and a car, resulting in her being charged with breaching a domestic violence order and wilful damage.

She was placed on six months probation and a conviction was recorded when she faced magistrates court.

Judge Rosengren said she had read three letters written for Douglas and it appeared she was taking substantial steps to turn her life around.

The breach had happened in Cherbourg and she had since left the area, the documents read.

Douglas had lost her mother at a young age and had the full-time care of her own children.

Judge Rosengren extended the operational period of the suspended sentence by six months.
