A woman who was unlicensed behind the wheel while without a required interlock device found herself in deep trouble when she crashed during heavy rain because her windshield wipers weren’t working.

Tanya Maree Flack pleaded guilty to driving unlicensed and driving without due care and attention when she faced Maryborough Magistrates Court this week.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Sonia Edwards said on 10.30pm on April 3, police had been sent to a crash on Alice St.

Flack had crashed into a parked truck, Sgt Edwards said.

Her licence had been disqualified for four months and there was an interlock period of five years that had started on July 20, 2024, Sgt Edwards said.

“She had not renewed her licence for an interlock licence during that period,” Sgt Edwards said.

In relation to the crash, Flack told police she couldn’t see out of her front windscreen because her windshield wipers were broken.

“It was pouring rain at the time and she veered off the road and hit a parked truck,” Sgt Edwards said.

“It did cause extensive damage to her front bonnet of her vehicle and the rear of the truck involved.”

Sgt Edwards said Flack was aware the wipers needed fixing and appeared she could not afford the interlock provision.

She also explained being unlicensed meant Flack would also have been uninsured, which was of no use to the owner of the other vehicle.

Flack, who was representing herself, said she didn’t wish to say anything in response.

Sgt Edwards said Flack had been cooperative with police, making full admissions.

Magistrate John Milburn said it was a serious matter as Flack had caused a collision.

“There’s no material before me as to the extent of property damage sustained by the owner of the truck,” he said.

“You did so in circumstances where, knowing your wipers weren’t working, you chose to drive in the rain anyway.”

Mr Milburn said Flack had been before the court with a significant drink driving level in March 2024 and she had been disqualified from driving for four months

Flack was fined $900 and she was disqualified from driving for two months.
