Motorcyclist fined for speeding at scene of fatal crash

Less than a week after a horror motorbike crash claimed the life of a man at Burrum Heads, a 64-year-old motorbike rider has been caught doing 135km/h on the same road after overtaking an unmarked police car.

A motorbike rider going 35km over the speed limit near the scene of a fatal accident has been busted and fined $1000.

Police were conducting patrols at Burrum Heads Rd, Burrum Heads, about 11am on February 5, when a Harley Davidson overtook their unmarked car at 135km/h in a 100km zone.

A 64-year-old Torquay rider was fined $1161 and penalised six demerit points for speeding.

He told police he was aware of the fatal incident which took place on Friday, February 2, which caused the death of 60-year-old Apple Tree Creek motorcyclist David Potter, who was also riding a Harley Davidson.

Wide Bay District Highway Patrol Officer Josh Churchward said that type of driving behaviour was a complete disregard for the law and the safety of the community.

“We need drivers to begin to take responsibility for their behaviour,” he said.

“Adopting the view of speeding on any road let alone metres from a recent road fatality is completely irresponsible,” Sergeant Churchward said.

Police Operation Victor Bombay is aimed at reducing the road toll in the Wide Bay Region.

In 2023, 44 people died on Wide Bay roads.

The police officers involved in the operation will be anywhere at any time, and rural roads and heavy vehicles will be included in the operation.
