A father-of-three who lit a homemade bomb that blew up at a bus stop in Brisbane in early 2022 has been jailed for that, and a series of other crimes.

Max Edward Carne, 38, pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court to entering the home of a 72-year-old woman and stealing, stealing a car, damaging a bus stop seat belonging to Brisbane City Council and possessing explosives without authority.

Police prosecutor Louese McConnell said that just after midnight on January 30, 2022, Carne was walking on Kirby Road in Aspley when he placed the homemade explosive on the seat of a bus stop, lit it and walked away.

When it exploded it caused a loud noise and damage to part of seat, she said.

As police searched Carne’s house in Zillmere on February 1, 2022, he admitted to possessing the explosive which he described as a “small homemade pipe bomb”.

Ms McConnell said Carne told police he had no reason for having it and “did not realise how large or loud the explosion would be”.

Defence lawyer Daniel Ould said his client did not intend to cause anyone any kind of injury, and was not aware of how powerful the explosive was, thinking it would be a firecracker.

The court heard Carne was a painter by trade and had three children.

Magistrate Trinity McGarvie emphasised the seriousness of Carne’s possession of the pipe bomb and its detonation.

Max Edward Carne faced Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday for possessing explosives without authority and wilful damage.

The court also heard that between 8.15am and 1pm on December 26, 2021, Carne stole a woman’s car and handbag containing a phone, purse and keys.

The woman was working at the Homemaker Centre on Gympie Road when she noticed her handbag was missing from the staff area, and later realised her vehicle had been stolen.

Ms McConnell said Carne was captured in footage on the store’s CCTV cameras.

On January 10, 2022, the vehicle was found by police.

On an unknown date between December 28, 2021, and January 4, 2022, Carne also broke into the home of a 72-year-old woman while she was away and stole various items, the court also heard.

Ms McConnell said the window to the woman’s house was jemmied open and jewellery worth more than $6000, a purse and coins was taken.

Carne was sentenced 15 months jail for entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence, nine months for unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three months for stealing, two months for wilful damage, and six months for possessing explosives without authority – all to be served concurrently.

He was allowed immediate parole.

The property in relation to the explosive charge was also ordered to be forfeited for destruction.

Convictions were recorded.
