A civil construction worker who damaged his mother’s home by punching the walls later burned items in the backyard.

The man pleaded guilty to one count of breaching a domestic violence order when he faced Maryborough Magistrates Court this week.

Police prosecutor Balam Selvadurai said police had been called to a home in Maryborough about 5am on November 8 in relation to the man punching walls.

When they arrived a woman told them she had returned home after receiving a call from her son saying his older brother had threatened him.

He sent a video of the brother burning his property in the backyard and the woman said she had seen the damage inside the home.

The brother left before police got there but they soon found him, the court was told.

He told police he did not know what had happened and was taken to the watch-house.

The man was on a suspended sentence for other unrelated offences.

Duty lawyer Morgan Harris said the man had paid his mother back for the damage.

“He had intended to repair the damage himself, however the order prohibits him from being at that address,” Mr Harris said.

The man was currently working in civil construction and his employer was aware of the offending.

Mr Harris said it would be unjust to activate the suspended sentence.

He said alcohol had been “heavily involved” in the incident as he had been mixing alcohol with his seizure medication.

“He’s now completely dry of alcohol,” Mr Harris said.

Magistrate Stephen Guttridge fined the man $500 and the suspended sentence was extended for a further three months.

A conviction was recorded.
