A teenager who robbed a pizza delivery driver with a knife and a set of hedge trimmers has told a court of his remorse.

Kallum James Rogers, 18, pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery, stealing, unlawful possession of tainted property and unauthorised dealing with shop goods when he faced Maryborough District Court on Monday.

The court heard on night of the incident, the Dominos delivery driver had been sent to an address to deliver pizza.

He drove to the address and parked the car and when he walked to the front of the car, he saw Rogers, who had placed the order using a false name.

The driver placed the hot cell containing the pizzas on the bonnet of the car and walked around to the passenger side to retrieve an item.

When he turned, he saw Rogers holding the pizzas with one hand while his other hand was behind his back.

Rogers took three steps towards him, and the victim took a few steps back.

Rogers told him to “get everything that’s valuable out of the car and put it on top of the car now”.

Rogers was holding a hedge trimmer, a bladed instrument, and a knife in his left hand, the court was told.

The victim put his phone, wallet and car keys on the bonnet, then took a step back and said, “please don’t hurt me, I haven’t done anything wrong”.

Rogers placed the pizzas in his other hand and tried to unlock the car, before walking towards the victim saying, “don’t do anything stupid”.

“The only person acting stupidly at that time was you,” Judge Terry Gardiner said.

Rogers took the hot cell bag containing the pizzas and walked off into bushland, the court heard.

The value of the pizzas was about $101.

Police stopped Rogers later that night wearing the same shirt he had been identified as wearing in the dashcam footage.

When they later searched the motorhome owned by his father, they found the hedge trimmer, knife and the pizza delivery bag.

A number of mobile phones from Big W were also found.

The court heard the delivery driver had been in a vulnerable situation, working alone at night, and was only doing his job when the incident happened.

Judge Gardiner described the worker’s victim impact statement as “very sad reading”.

The court heard Rogers had no criminal history, was one of seven children of separated parents, had a five-month-old child, and had taken a number of courses while in custody.

He had started using meth at 14 and had become addicted.

Rogers was remorseful for his behaviour, the court heard.

Judge Gardiner gave Rogers a head sentence of 18 months in prison.

The time he had spent in presentence custody was taken into account as time served.

Rogers was released immediately on parole.
