Two men have been killed and a boy injured in a crash which closed the Bruce Highway for more than five hours between Maryborough and Gympie.
As of 1.40pm police remained on the scene monitoring traffic congestion 5km north of Tiaro at Owanyilla where the crash happened about 8am.
Two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 50s, died at the scene.
A boy, who was also hurt but in a stable condition, was flown via rescue helicopter to hospital for further treatment.
The highway was closed between Tiaro and Maryborough at the Alice St intersection for several hours with diversions in place via Mungar Rd and Maryborough Cooloola Rd.
Initial police investigations show about 8am a White Hyundai hatchback was travelling southbound when it collided with a white Volkswagen travelling northbound.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 43-year-old Kallangur man, died at the scene after suffering critical injuries
The driver of the Volkswagen, a 57-year-old Buddina man also died at the scene.
His passenger, an 11-year-old boy, was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition, requiring further treatment.
Police are urging anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
Photos emerging from the scene showed backed up traffic as well as multiple oversized loads near the crash site and a long line of trucks.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
