A clumsy shoplifter who took a tyre repair kit from Big W dropped it on her way out of the store before again concealing the item and leaving.
Courtney Ann Louise Hicks-Cundy, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of shoplifting when she faced Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The court heard on November 6, 2024, Hicks-Cundy entered Hervey Bay’s Fresh & Save with others and took items, placing stock in the bags and under their clothing.
The group was observed by the store manager as they walked to the checkout and paid for a soft drink, but not the other items, the court was told.
The items were worth about $60.
Footage of the incident was later provided to police.
Hicks-Cundy later declined to be interviewed by police in relation to the matter, only saying that she was “going through a rough trot”.
Then on November 18, 2024, Hicks-Cundy went to Big W in Hervey Bay and stole sporting items, including bike tubes and a tyre repair kit.
She went into another section and came out without the items, the court heard.
As Hicks-Cundy was leaving the store she dropped the tyre repair kit then picked it up and hid it again.
Again footage was captured of the incident.
The court heard Hicks-Cundy was receiving Centrelink payments and had been homeless at the time.
She was still facing homelessness and had a limited capacity to pay a fine.
Magistrate Trinity McGarvie said Hicks-Cundy had been before the court on two occasions for similar offence in the past two years.
She said shoplifting came at a cost to the whole community.
Hicks-Cundy was fined a total of $700 for the two offences and convictions were recorded.
