Plastic bags to be phased out on parts of Fraser Island

The group has announced a plan to phase out plastic bags from their stores on World Environment Day this Sunday, June 5.

PLASTIC bags will be a thing of the past at Kingfisher Bay Resort Group shops and cafes on Fraser Island.

The group has announced a plan to phase out plastic bags from their stores on World Environment Day this Sunday, June 5.

The general stores, bars, bakeries and cafes at Kingfisher Bay Resort and Eurong Beach Resort will no longer use or provide plastic bags instead offering re-usable canvass bags.

Kingfisher Bay Resort Group general manager David Hay said the time was right to phase out the use of plastic bags.

"We didn't feel that the use of plastic bags really fitted with our sustainable approach to business on Fraser Island," he said.

"We will cease offering our guests plastic bags and instead offer them the option of purchasing a re-usable bag. The bags are already available for sale and make handy souvenirs of their visit to Fraser Island."

The decision to phase out plastic bags builds on the reputation for world-class eco-tourism that has become synonymous with Kingfisher Bay Resort. With a strong focus on sustainability, the resort offers everything from conservation credits to guests who chose to skip room cleaning, to carbon neutral conferencing and corporate events.

Most recently, the Kingfisher Bay Resort partnered with touring group Fun Over Fifty with guests volunteering to plant trees during their stay.

"We are passionate about delivering sustainable tourism experience here on Fraser Island," Mr Hay said.

"We're very proud of our World Heritage-listed back yard, and we encourage our guests to explore it, enjoy it and work with us to keep it in the most pristine condition."
