Construction is underway on a childcare centre in Urraween, which will be able to accommodate 95 children and will employ 16 staff members.

The centre is under construction at the intersection of Urraween Rd and Maryborough-Hervey Bay Rd and will include a 27-space carpark and three outdoor play areas, along with a single-storey building.

The building itself will include six rooms, according to documents lodged with the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

The application was lodged by Audax Partners.

According to the application, the hours of operation are limited to between 6.30am and 7pm Monday to Friday.

The new childcare will be close to other education centres, including St James Lutheran College and Bayside Christian College.

Fraser Coast councillor Denis Chapman said the development would be welcomed by families in the region.

“Any business coming into the region is welcome to the area,” Mr Chapman said.

He said residents did raise some concerns about traffic at the nearby intersection.

In 2017, extensive upgrades were carried out at the intersection of Urraween Rd and Maryborough-Hervey Bay Rd, which had become a hotspot for traffic crashes and Mr Chapman said that was now a big positive.

Traffic lights were installed and the speed limit has been reduced. About $12.5 million was spent on making the intersection safer.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott also welcomed the development.

“We are seeing constant growth around our region lately, which is encouraging and beneficial to the local economy - even if at present it‘s making it hard to get work done due to supply chain issues,” he said.

“Previous growth predictions for the region will have to be changed as we‘ve had huge sudden growth due to Covid and more people from around Australia releasing how the Fraser Coast is truly one of the best places to live, work and play.

“The construction we are seeing everywhere means growth and a boost to our economy, something we are all happy to see, and the good news is that there‘s still so much more to come.”
