Mette Stimson opens Golden Grain German Bakery

Finding love on a working holiday has taken talented pastry chef Mette Stimson from Europe to the Northern Territory and now the Fraser Coast, where the secret recipes handed down by her father are about to be unleashed on the local population.

From Hamburg to Toogoom, with many steps in between, Mette Stimson is bringing her signature German baking to the Fraser Coast.

Golden Grain German Bakery will open soon, with Mette selling traditional German breads and pastries – brezel, berlingr and scrolls - she makes from scratch from her 1967 vintage caravan.

The Howard markets will be the first port of call, with a permanent space on the horizon in the near future, she said.

The German national, who moved to Australia a decade ago when she found love on a working holiday, has been baking as long as she can remember and recently ran and baked for a café in Katherine, Northern Territory before moving to the Fraser Coast.

“I always baked with my dad when I was younger,” she said.

“My dad is a retired baker, and he never wanted to give me any recipes – it was a baker’s secret,” she said.

“But he started to get loose on the recipes and I got all them all when I proved to him I was serious about baking.”

Mette’s baking dream had been a long time coming. Mette was a qualified vet nurse when she set out to see the world – not wanting to follow the trend in her home region in Germany of settling down and never leaving, she said.

Then marrying and becoming a mother to three young children put baking on hold, and it wasn’t until several years after working a desk job that ultimately caused a breakdown that Mette decided to follow her passion.

“I had a breakdown with the pressure of working and not doing what I liked – I was in front of the computer 24 /7.

“But then I started self-care and started baking and I really loved it.”

The baking turned serious when there was too much food for the family of five to consume at home.

“My husband said you have to stop making it or start selling it because I’m getting too fat,” she said.

She is now ready to share her passion with the Fraser Coast.
