A MARYBOROUGH paramedic has been commended for his brave conduct after he rescued a family from a house fire in February last year.
Lyle Oppermann, of Maryborough's Queensland Ambulance Service, and his colleague Simon Knight responded to reports that a Kawungan home in Ian Ave was on fire.
When they arrived, a neighbour informed them the young family was still inside the house.
Mr Oppermann and Mr Knight saw two children sleeping in one room.
Unable to wake them, the men broke a window with a torch and Mr Oppermann climbed into the room, injuring his arm.
He then picked up the children and carried them outside to Mr Knight.
Making his way through the smoke-filled home, he let Queensland Fire and Emergency Services personnel inside, then helped search the home.
An unresponsive woman was found and she was also carried outside.
Mr Oppermann was treated for his injuries and for smoke inhalation.
For his actions, Mr Oppermann has been recognised on the Australian Bravery Awards List.
At the time of the incident, both Mr Oppermann and Mr Knight refused to take credit for the rescue, giving all credit to the vigilant neighbour who called emergency services and knew the family were still inside the home.
"If he hadn't called 000, it's certain they would be dead," Mr Knight said.
Mr Oppermann said: "The praise goes to the neighbour, not to us.
"That is someone that went above and beyond."
The three family members were treated for smoke inhalation and were released from hospital the following day.
