Maryborough’s Woolworths set to reopen after flood damage

After being damaged by the flooding in February, Maryborough’s Woolworths supermarket is just days away from fully reopening.

After being badly damaged in the February floods, Maryborough’s Woolworths supermarket in Adelaide St is just a week away from reopening its doors.

The supermarket had narrowly avoided being flooded in January when a major flood reaching about 10m hit the city in the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Seth.

Then, a flood reaching 10.3m hit Maryborough after heavy rain in the Mary River catchment and the supermarket was not as lucky.

A pop-up shop has operated at the Adelaide St supermarket since March, offering a range of groceries on a smaller scale, plus essentials like bread, milk, eggs, and limited other items in fresh produce and meat.

Now, the pop-up shop will close from 6pm on July 2 to prepare for the official reopening of the supermarket from 8am on July 7.

“It’s been a devastating time for the people of Maryborough, including many of our own team members and their families, and we are determined to stand together as the community rebuilds and gradually recovers,” Melissa O’Hara, Woolworths Maryborough Group Manager said in the aftermath of the floods.

“We know that Woolworths Maryborough plays an important role in the community and we’re proud to have our team actively involved in the recovery process.”

There had been some conjecture that Woolworths was considering moving from its current location due to the ongoing flood risks at the site, but a spokesman ruled that out – at least for now.

“We are committed to reopening our Maryborough Woolworths store on Adelaide St and look forward to welcoming our customers back to the full supermarket experience in June,” the spokesman said.

“While there are no current plans to relocate our supermarket, we are always reviewing opportunities to improve our network.”
