A teenager involved in a senseless act of vandalism in Maryborough is making amends after coming forward to the Fraser Coast Council.
Fraser Coast Councillor Paul Truscott shared the CCTV footage of a group of teens kicking a light bollard in Maryborough’s central business district, causing damage.
But Cr Truscott shared the heartwarming news that one of the young men had come forward, apologised and wanted to repay his debt to the community.
“Last week we all saw the video of lighting being vandalised in the Maryborough CBD and were understandably outraged,” he said.
“Thankfully things have changed since then.
“Out of the people involved in the incident, one of them came forward to council, through myself, and apologised for the behaviour and wanted to repay their debt to the community and this week, over the school holidays, has worked with council each day to do so.
“It was a real opportunity to meet with this young man and to have a discussion about what happened and where to from here.
“We got to talk about second chances, that we’ve all made silly mistakes, and just because a story starts bad, doesn’t have to mean that it ends bad.”
Cr Truscott said it took guts for the young man to come forward and admit he made a mistake and he applauded him for doing it.
“He said that he appreciated being able to work it off with council and enjoyed his time so far and even thought it might be good to work for council one day.
“As Rocky Balboa said, ‘It’s not about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward’.
“I wish this young man all the best for making good decisions moving forward and I hope that he can find great opportunities ahead.”
It comes after a spate of crimes committed by young offenders in the region in recent times.
