A 51-YEAR-old Brisbane man suffering chest pain has been winched off a sandbank on the western side of Fraser Island by the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter team.

A rescue helicopter spokeswoman said the man was holidaying with family on a houseboat when he experienced serious chest pain on Monday.

The family was directed to use the boat's tender to transport him 200m to a beach known as Gary's Anchorage.

About 5.10pm on Monday, the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter winched its flight paramedic down to the man who was secured in a hypo-strop and winched up to the helicopter.

He was airlifted to Nambour General Hospital in a stable condition.
