A MAN was left with suspected serious spinal injuries after a fall during a boating expedition near Fraser Island yesterday morning.

The 68-year-old man from New South Wales was enjoying a fishing trip with friends and family when he lost his balance on deck and fell, striking his head.

The AGL Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene.

The helicopter landed on the beach at the northern end of Fraser Island where the boat had motored towards the shore.

The aircrew waded into chest-deep water to meet the boat and the flight doctor and paramedic began to treat the injured man.

The man was stabilised using a specialised spinal stretcher and carried through the surf to the beach and the waiting helicopter.

He was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in a serious but stable condition.
